Shampoos are designed to remove oily dirt from your hair. Unfortunately, the soaps contained in shampoos can sometimes be too vigorous and active and remove too much natural oil from the hair and scalp. When this happens, the hair can feel curly and dry, and if it is extremely stressed, it can cause hair damage. The Hydrating Shampoo by Firsthand is formulated so that its soap balance is sufficient to gently remove dirt and grease, but not so much to remove excess oil from the hair. This is the first of three important steps in producing a moisturizing shampoo.
The second step is to add natural oils and fatty substances to the hair and scalp.
Firsthand has selected light oils that are fast growing and mimic the molecular structure of natural hair oil (tallow). This helps to ensure that the natural oil loss of the soaps is replaced by other ingredients in the shampoo.
The third step is to add the actual moisturizing ingredients to the shampoo. Chemists refer to these ingredients as "moisturizers" and help moisturise hair and scalp. We would like to highlight some of the moisturizers added by Firsthand, as they are, in our opinion, a very effective and yet natural way of moisturizing the scalp.
One of the humectants is hydroxypropyltrimonium honey. Humans have used honey for thousands of years to moisturize their hair. Honey as a cosmetic ingredient has some problems. For one thing, it's sticky. Once the shampoo is rinsed out of the hair, the honey is also washed away, so the effects are minimal. Hydroxypropyltrimonium honey (also known as HoneyQuat) is honey that has been chemically modified with a positive charge. This not only reduces the material thickness (making it easier to apply to the hair), but also attracts the positive charge from the negative electrical charges in our hair strands. This makes it difficult to wash off the HoneyQuat material so that it remains (as an invisible, microscopic layer) on the hair and scalp and sucks in water throughout the day.
Another humectant is pro-vitamin B5 or panthenol. This molecule penetrates easily into hair and skin and brings softness, shine and moisture.
Another humectant is the saccharide isomerate. This is a form of plant sugar. Like the HoneyQuat ingredient, it forms an invisible layer / bond to hair and skin that lasts up to 72 hours. Meanwhile, it dries moisture in the hair and skin.
These steps, along with the addition of sodium L-pyroglutamate (sodium PCA), a natural amino acid that attracts water, make the Moisture Shampoo a top performer.
